IA Ops (2004)

A Summary of Indian Army Operations 2004

Rishi Tandon & Airavat Singh

Executive Summary

In the year 2004 the Indian Army continued with its traditional duties of securing the borders, conducting internal security operations, holding large-scale training exercises, and fulfilling India’s international peacekeeping commitments. While these duties are performed in tandem with its sister services and with the paramilitary troops; the army always plays a lead role. This paper will list notable events from these operations throughout the year, present an outline of the military organization on the ground (Orbat) in each operational area, and in a final end note analyze and summarize these operations. Since the information is drawn from publicly available sources military exercises will not be studied in this paper. Two general maps will provide reference points for understanding unit locations and the wide dispersal of each operational area. In the media reports these units are identified variously by their identification numbers, locations, or at times by their identification badges, leading to some confusion. By way of example the 10 Infantry Division under the 16 Corps is also called the Akhnur Division (from its location) and the Crossed-Swords Division (from its badge).

The military operations covered are:

Operation Meghdoot (Siachen, since 1984)

Operation Vijay (LOC, Kargil, Drass Area)

Operation Rakshak-III (J&K CI Ops)

Operation Rhino-II (Assam CI Ops)

Op Hifazat-II (Manipur)

Operation Orchid (Nagaland)

The Northeast (summary of other operations)
